I never knew that being a mum requires some “talent” in singing. Well, singing nursery rhymes, that is. I’m by nature not a singing type of person. Not in the bathroom, not in a karaoke, not in the car while driving. I’m just not a good singer, period.
But since having the little boy, I’ve sang the most in the last one year compared to my entire life. For months, I used to sing to him during bedtime, to lull him to sleep. And I must say I’m quite glad that even my out of tune singing can put my boy to sleep, and he doesn’t look at me funny when the key is completely off. Babies are never fussy listeners!
Nowadays we don’t sing much to lull him to bed. Instead, he listens to a lot more nursery rhymes on CDs and VCDs now and obviously he gets a much larger variety of songs rather than be limited to my Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star, London Bridge, Mary Had A Little Lamb, etc.
Having access to more lively songs is great for him but at times it backfires on me. Reason being he would sometimes point towards me and say “Shing” – asking me to sing him songs. He doesn’t seem to approve much of my limited songs anymore, probably wanting more of those that he has heard on CDs. And this mummy can’t sing them!
Isn’t it time to learn how to sing? And it’s back to the basics of good old nursery rhymes….But then again, I do enjoy how he would do his little “dances” when he hears a tune he likes. That is more than enough for me keep meeting his “shing” demands.

hi there penny,
yes, it’s true indeed. mommies are expected to have the ability to sing. the same thing happened to me, too. i know i can’t sing, i only croak. however, to my surprise…my lil’ heroes love to hear me croaking away all the nursery rhymes and they would always have a fantastic feedback.
happy singing, penny
Me too but thankfully I love to sing so I dont mind singing to Hayley. I sing to her during feeding time. She doesnt like singing during bedtime
Ai-Ling, haha, then we are both croakers but to our children, we’re probably great singers??! Happy singing to you too!
Btw, I’ve linked you up.
Amy, that’s odd, so there’s no need to lull her to bed with singing huh? She must be adore your singing too much to treat it as lullabies
I’ve also linked you up!
No la, I don’t sing cause each night when I need to put her to sleep, it’s like a battle for the papa (he puts her to sleep). She only wants to play and refuse to sleep. If we force her she will cry and cry and cry until she gets tired and then sleep. No chance for me to sing also.. haha
Hahaha…so better don’t sing and activate her mind huh? Doesn’t she get tired out and just knock off for the night? We play with our little boy and when he’s real tired, we don’t even need to sing before he falls asleep!
