My mom is away in India for a long time. While there, she misses her grandson terribly and is always asking about him. So this post is specially for the benefit of the grandson-sick grandma, just so she knows how he is doing, how much he has grown, and how much more delightful he is. But grandma, promise not to cry when you read all about him!
In the last month, he has learned a lot and has surprised us all with his enhanced vocabs. He’s saying things we didn’t know he knew, which he most likely picked up from the babysitter. One day while I was giving him a bath, he pointed at the shampoo bottle and said shampoo and I was dead impressed because he pronounced it really well! That was the start of me trying to dig into what else he knows. So we simply point at things or say a word and ask him to identify the object we named. And he aced this little game most of the time.
We’ve also begun teaching him how to use two out of the three magic words – please and thank you. Of course he can’t say them accurately but I simply love how he says “Piss” and “Yoo” in an attempt to mimick the words.
He’s walking a lot more stably now, although he still looks like he will fall any minute. And when he does fall or bang into something, he would claim that the floor or the object he banged into is “bad” and then lightly hit it as punishment! It’s so cute when he does that. Once he’s on his feet, you can never get him to stop walking. Up and down the room he goes and if you try to carry him, he would fuss and scream to be let down on his foot again. I guess he just loves his new found freedom and skill in being mobile without the walker.
We’ve been buying some new VCDs for him, some nursery rhymes and even a new animated movie in an attempt to get him off his addiction to the Bee Movie. But all of them failed. He wouldn’t even give them a chance to thrill him. When he sees something on the screen that is not part of the Bee Movie, he would say “No….” and then asks for his favourite “Bee!”. So we’ve watched the movie again and again and again and seriously, we can now memorise the dialogues for most of the characters! Even he can memorise the scenes. He would exclaim “Bear!” just before the bear appears on the screen and he’ll even imitate one of the character’s reaction when he knocked his head on the table. And as he watches more and more of it, he’s picking up even more scenes to pre-point out what’s next. It’s amusing for us to watch him instead of the movie now.
With just 8 teeth, he’s also begun to have a taste of many other food besides his normal diet of fish or chicken porridge with vege. Apart from his love for biscuits and bread, here’s a list of new stuff that he likes and not:
White rice – loves it!
Tomato sauce pasta – Not for it.
Fresh tomato – only the sweet bit.
Yogurt – ahh, who doesn’t like yogurt?
Muffin – loves, loves, loves it!
Chocolate – definitely loves the taste
Mashed potato – not too keen
The other day we put before him a spoonful of rice and a bite of muffin. We asked him to choose which one he wants to be fed. He looked at us sheepishly and he shrugged his shoulders, with both palms opened as if to say “I don’t know”. But when you ask him to choose between something that he likes and not, he would right away make his decision without having to shrug.
When it comes to songs, he’s still picky with what we sing. He used to say “No…” and get us to change the song we’re saying. But now, this is what happens.
The mummy or daddy singing a song.
Baby: “Papa?” or “Mimi?” depending on who’s singing.
Mummy or daddy stops singing: “Yes, boy?”
Baby: Puts up his index finger and says “No…”
Mummy or daddy: “What song do you want then?”
Baby: Tells us what songs he wants and we try to guess it with these few tips:
“Baa baa” – Baa Baa Black Sheep
“Inke inke” with fingers waving above – Twinkle Twinkle Little Star
“Mm mm, mmm mmm mmm” – Lou Lou Skip To My Lou
Other kinds of humming and we just have to try and catch the tune of the humming!
He’s gotten rather cheeky these days too. It’s hard to describe it, you’ve just got to see him for yourself. He’s been so entertaining to us and I’m sure we’re also a bunch of clowns to him. Whatever makes the family happy, right?
