Australian jade perch is very high in Omega-3 oils
by Penny on August 17, 2008
Australian jade perch is a type of fish farmed in Australia. I first came across this fish while shopping at my usual frozen fish shop in Taman Tun. I’m not a fish person, so when I tried it, I wasn’t impressed. But then again, don’t take it from a fish-avoider like me.
What interests me though is that the Australian jade perch is found to contain extremely high levels of omega-3 oils. This oil, if you didn’t already know, is food for the brain. Naturally, this is a very good type of fish for children to build up their brain power. Parents nowadays go for formula that contains high levels of DHA for this same reason.
As much as I would love to cook baby’s porridge with this fish, I find that it’s not quite practical because the jade perch sold at the store comes in a whole fish. I normally buy sole fillets and butter fish chunks where chances of finding a bone is quite low. I’m not so concerned about the tedious work of making sure the whole fish is thoroughly cleaned of bones, but more worried that I may not get rid of all the bones 100%.
Anway, have you tried feeding this fish to your little ones and if yes, how did they like it?
