Baby proofing the home

by Penny on June 5, 2008

I guess baby boys are more active, boisterous and rough with things. Now that my little boy can crawl almost at the speed of lightning (surely I’m exagerating!), fumble his way to stand on his two own feet, dash at high speed in his walker and attempt to climb out of his high chair, it is obvious to us that it’s time to baby-proof the home.

The first thing we did was to get those colourful soft mats that join up together like jigsaw puzzles. We lay them on the ground and let him crawl around on it so that if he were to fall and knock himself, at least it’s not on the hard floors.

Then, we took down our bed frame. So all we’ve got now is the headboard and a Japanese-style bed on the floor. We figured that if the baby were to somehow fall off the bed (touch wood!), at least it won’t be from a high level. I initially thought it would be so weird, but as it turns out, I actually like this arrangement a lot more.

So far so food with some minor baby-proofing done. Other things we gotta do is to protect sharp edges of furniture like table corners with some rubber wrappers. I saw some of these at Guardian and they’re on sale too. It doesn’t seem too expensive for one pack of them, but I realised that I need to count first how many corners I need to protect since he runs all about the hall, coming into contact with lots of edges!

And then there’s also powerpoints to think about. We need to buy some secured two-pin plugs to prevent baby from poking a finger or two into emply powerpoint slots. There are also some plastic hinges that keep cabinet doors and drawers closed. Now what else do I need? Parents, any important stuff I’ve missed out?
