Bedtime talk

by Penny on February 24, 2011

Putting Ryan to bed has very handsome rewards these days. When he was much younger, it was something quite difficult to do, especially when he had taken a long nap in the afternoon. He would take so long to fall asleep that we end up being fast asleep way before him.

These days it has gotten a little easier, he does fall asleep faster. But there are some exceptional days when we still doze off before him.

The fun with it these days is that he communicates a lot more than before. Oh, did I ever write about how chatty a boy he is? He’s always been and now he’s a real chatter box with us. Can’t get him to stop, not even when he’s on the toilet!

When the lights are out and we’re lying in bed, he tends to asks questions. You just never know what comes out from him. Life is like a box of chocolate, isn’t it? Sometimes he would also tell us things which he’s stored in his little head for some time before remembering to tell us about it. Something about school and what his teacher said or what some of his classmates did.

Two nights ago while we laid in bed, he rolled over to his sides and seemed to be thinking with his eyes slightly turned upwards. After a few seconds, he asked me “Mummy, what is your dream?”

I was utterly surprised by his question. I don’t know if he was asking what I dreamt about while I slept or it was literally what it meant – what is my life’s dream. I chose to answer the question according to the latter interpretation. He listened and when I finished, he responded “Oh”.

Soon after I heard his soft yawn. And then he was away in his own dreamland for the night.

As you may have rightly guessed, I do love bedtime talks with Ryan. Which parent doesn’t? What are your stories like?

My daughter is pretty stubborn during the day, but at bedtime she magically becomes compliant and vulnerable. I love using the time to talk about her day, and teach her about good behaviours.

I have to admit sometimes I want to watch TV but I think this has become a sweet ritual for us.

There’s surely a price to pay for sweet rewards like these…I sometimes stay up to catch the repeat of shows I want to watch :P
