Do babies hunch?

by Penny on April 28, 2008

We adults tend to have not-so-perfect postures. We don’t sit up straight and some of us also tend to hunch even when standing. When did we learn to hunch, do you wonder? Because apparently, babies don’t hunch and only do so as they grow. I was told that it’s because babies don’t know how to hunch. Is that true for a fact?

Obviously I’ve never noticed this before. But since I was told of this, I took more notice whenever baby sits on his own without any back supports from chairs or propped up pillows. He does sit upright all the time that I’ve been watching, and no matter how long he sits there, he’s never hunched.

So does this confirm that babies don’t know how to hunch or this is just a coincidental finding? I don’t know why this hunching topic interests me, I just find it intriguing!
