I can relate to not allowing the change of pillow cover, because I was like that too! :P Amy, it’s still not too late to introduce one to Hayley. My mum handmade a small size pillow for my son too since he's born. And its pillow cover is Hello Kitty prints ! Hayley surprisingly doesn't have one. I tried to encourage it by putting a bolster, a kangaroo toy and even a little teddy bed in her cot but she prefers to sleep on her tummy without hugging anything :-) Maybe this is why it makes it so hard for us to put her to sleep :-( I have one (a little pillow) that I think was attached to me until I was like 12 or 13 (can’t remember).
