Don’t save the money and lose a life

When we first brought baby for his vaccinations when he was barely two months old, the paediatrician went through a list of compulsory and recommended vaccinations for baby. The recommended ones include Rotavirus and Pneumococcal.

Rotavirus prevents a baby from having severe diarrhoea and being in a sorry state where the baby has to be put on drips. The vaccination is an oral one and consists of two dosages. Baby had just finished this series of vaccination and I have to say it must be his favourite vaccination because it’s sweet tasting and definitely painless. Each dose cost me RM170.

The Pneumococcal vaccination on the other hand prevents baby from a couple of medical conditions, namely pneumonia, meningitis, a variety of blood and ear infections. The number of vaccinations to be administered depends on when you start baby off with it. It’s a maximum of 4 dosages for a baby starting as early as two months old. We’re starting baby during his seventh month, and that would require him to take three dosages. If a baby is given the first dosage above the age of one, then it will be just two dosages to be administered.

However, the paed advised for us to start giving the vaccination as early as possible and not to take the risk. Toddlers two years and below are prone to this attack.

It is an expensive vaccination but any price is worth the life of a loved one, especially one that we bring into this world. Each dose costs RM280 at the hospital where we bring baby.

If you have not given any of these recommended vaccinations to your baby, don’t think twice. Just go for it. It’s better to be safe than sorry.
