First time seeing my son bleed

by Penny on July 1, 2009

Ryan has his fair share of falls and cuts every now and then for being clumsy or running too fast and banging into furniture.  So he’s got some bruises and scratches to show for them. But I’ve never really seen him bleed. At the most, he comes home with some scratches on the skin from his little mishaps.

But today I saw him bleed with my very own eyes for the first time, and it made me feel so sorry for him. This morning he had to go for a blood test and the nurse pricked his little finger. I saw the blood drip from his finger and when the nurse was trying to collect the blood into a test tube, he refused and cried because he thought he was going to be pricked again.

It made me ache to see him in agony over that blood test. He didn’t cry when he was pricked, only after. It took a few minutes for the nurse to get enough blood sample from his bleeding finger and half the time he was crying and begging to be brought out of the room. Although he very much wanted to escape from that room, he was sitting very still on my lap and didn’t physically struggle. He just cried and asked to be taken out of there repeatedly until we managed to calm and persuade him that he wasn’t going to be hurt anymore.

It was indeed a very painful experience for me to see him go through that blood test. It was made even more torturing because he was behaving so well through it all, not even fussing a bit. My poor little boy. I hope he will forget about this experience quickly although I doubt that he will. He tends to remember things pretty well. It’s going to be a huge challenge to visit a doctor the next time, even when it’s for a well-visit.

It’s been a tiring day for me. You know, having a worrisome heart takes a toll on you in every way. I’m going to need a nap right now so that I can better care for Ryan later in the day.

Definitely…well I thought it was over but we had more coming. But I think we can now really put this behind us as we’ve cleared most hurdles.
