Have to learn more recipes

by Penny on January 17, 2010

Now that Ryan is growing and he’s learning to pick and choose his food, it’s time for me to learn more recipes. I’ve always been cooking him porridge, variations of them of course but in the end it’s still porridge. But now he sometimes asks for rice and noodles and I’ve got to figure out what kind of rice and noodles to cook for him.

I’ve not cooked in many years. Plus cooking for a kid is different from cooking for us adults. I try to think of using ingredients that are nutritious and being the lazy cook that I am, I try to dump in everything into the pan or pot and make it an all-in-one dish. But I realise as time goes by and he grows up, I don’t think I can do a one-pot dish anymore.

What do you other parents cook for your young toddlers? Do they eat what you cook for the family or do you cook separately for him like we do?

Sometimes it does get a bit difficult especially when we travel overseas. We’ve got to think of his meals as I don’t encourage him to eat outside food too much. I actually feel quite guilty if he has to eat 2 meals a day outside and have no home cooked food. That’s why if we travel, having an accommodation where there’s a kitchen available would be ideal.

So far we’ve found only 1 option, which is in Bangkok when we last went in May last year and stayed in Citadines. You can read the review that I wrote of the hotel too. Nice place and we enjoyed it very much.

For other places that I’ve been surfing about for accommodation options, I found some cheap hotels miami and even some bed and breakfast places in Europe to be cheap but don’t offer the kind of facilities I’m hoping to use. I guess in these places I’ve got to search harder. I do wish to bring Ryan to faraway places like these sometimes, maybe in 2 or 3 years time. But then you may say by then I won’t have to cook separately for him and it’s ok for him to eat outside food. Maybe, but who knows when this obsession of a parent will ever end huh?

But for now maybe I should concentrate on finding those recipes first before worrying about the vacation spots with kitchen facilities huh? Anyone has any to share with me?

My lil one gets porridge for lunch and rice (or whatever we’re eating outside if we’re not cooking) for dinner. Like you, I always feel guilty feeding her food from outside (twice she got diarrhea because of it) but sometimes can’t help it. So now we try to cook at least 4x a week to ensure that she gets healthy home cook food or at the very least a healthy soup with rice. And my lil one eats whatever we cook (vege, meat) but in small quantities and because of that we’re cooking healthier too (good for us adults) as we’re limiting the salt and oil etc.

I do agree that having a kid around the home makes us adults healthier too because we simply have to lead by example! :)
