Lots of road trips to come

by Penny on December 31, 2008

The month of December 2008 and January 2009 will see us travelling on the roads quite a bit. In December itself we’ve made 2 trips down south, once for a wedding and the other being the recent Christmas break. Come January, we’ll be making two more trips down south again, this time for a birthday celebration as well as the Chinese New Year festival.

The boy has started to protest getting into the car seat yesterday. It may prove to be a little more work on such long road trips if he doesn’t fall asleep during the journey. He will either fuss to be let out or just simply throwing tantrums if he gets tired. Letting him out of the car seat is definitely not an option so we will need to be able to distract him. He used to be easily distracted with watching the Bee Movie but now, he’s not so absorbed by it anymore. So we’ve got to start thinking of new ways.

The other thing about making lots of trips is the packing. I hate packing and unpacking, followed by the rounds of laundry to be done after we get back. But that’s something we can’t avoid if we want to have little getaways like these, right? We used to pack a huge bag for all of us but now we find that we need a separate bag just for the little boy’s clothes, diapers and toys! Maybe our bag is just not big enough. Perhaps a big sized Rimowa luggage would do the trick but then again I don’t fancy having a hard casing luggage because it tends to take up space.

Maybe I should think of better ways to do things when we next travel, which is in less than 2 weeks. Better ways to pack like rolling up clothes instead of folding them, bringing less things and clothes, bring travel sized toiletries, etc. Bringing less clothes may mean less laundry when we return too! Hehe, sneaky huh?

Anyway, the trips are actually quite fun for the boy because he gets to meet more people and socialise. He is a person who enjoys large crowds and company, and nowadays he doesn’t have that much stranger anxiety and could be carried by most people. So for whatever it is, these trips could do him more good aside from the fun.

I just hope that the roads won’t be too jammed especially during the Chinese New Year period. Gotta be smart in choosing our timing properly to travel to and fro our destinations.

I used to have problems with Ryan when travelling on longer routes. One thing I did was to have music blasting – his type of music of course. And it helps if you sing along as well. Nothing amuses a child more than seeing his mum making a fool out of herself.

True, music is a good distraction but how long could we be making a fool of ourselves on a long road trip? :P Sometimes I even fall asleep before he does! Haha.
