Did you know that Mother’s Day is celebrated on different days in different parts of the world? I didn’t know that until I was a student in university in the UK. There were Mother’s Day promotions going on everywhere in town sometime in early Spring of March, and I bought a card for my mum and had it sent home to Malaysia. But when she got it, she told me it isn’t Mother’s Day back home! It was only then that I found out people celebrated the day on different dates.
So do you know when we celebrate Mother’s Day here in Malaysia? It’s always on the second Sunday in the month of May. Don’t know why though. I guess someone just made up the rule and then we just went along with it.
So now that we know it’s going to be on the second Sunday of May, it means that this year Mother’s Day is just around the corner, being on 9th of May.
How will you be celebrating the day? Thought of any Mother’s Day presents yet? Today at a mall a sales promoter was trying to sell me a set of the new Clinique Happy perfume, some new variation to that Happy perfume they have. It was a gift set that can come with your choice of either make-up or skin care products. Other than being approached by this promoter to get something for Mother’s Day, I didn’t quite observe any other promotions meant for the coming Mother’s Day celebration. Strange…or maybe it’s a bit too early to shop for it?
I saw many online shops that are taking advantage of packaging their products aimed at Mother’s Day though. Some are very pretty things whilst some, you can tell are all out just to make a killing, a clear example was a pack of Acneticin products. We don’t buy acne treatments as presents for such a day, do we? Pretty insulting and not so thoughtful nor meaningful.
For those of you who just realised that the day is fast approaching and have not thought of anything to do, it’s not too late to start planning. Sometimes it doesn’t necessarily have to be about gifts, a nice warm family meal will be just as great and appreciated. So instead of cracking your head to think of presents, crack your head to think up good restaurants to bring the mothers and go on to make that reservation.
