On Friday night while we were playing with Ryan just before his bed time, I suffered a little accident. While the daddy was busy showing Ryan how some super “magic” was done with his Ernie plush toy, the boy found his father’s action to be so thrilling and funny that he couldn’t stop laughing. And when Ryan laughs, he doesn’t just stay still and laugh.
All the while I was trying to get a grip on Ryan because he tends to throw himself every which way and I was afraid he was going to fall off the bed at the rate he was laughing so hard. That’s when it happened….his head knocked into my face and I ended up biting my lower lip.
Thinking it was just a knock, father and son continued to laugh and stared at me. By now I was rolling onto my side, covering my lip in pain. I lied there for a while not moving when I realised that my lip tasted funny. That’s when I realised I must be bleeding. I rushed to the bathroom and looked in the mirror.
To my horror and dismay, my lower lip was bleeding profusely and there were 2 deep and ugly cuts. I immediately washed up. By now, both father and son were quiet in the room and next thing I know, the father was standing at the doorway to check on me. By the time I cleaned up and walked out of the bathroom, Ryan looked so worried and scared.
He was a lot more sober and when told that I was hurt, he came to me and gently kissed me several times. I lied down to apply a cold towel on the lip to help with the bleeding and healing of the wound and he lied beside me. Every now and then he would attempt to kiss me again.
I didn’t want him to feel bad about it so I kept reassuring him that it was okay, that it was just an accident. I felt bad if he got scared or felt like he did something wrong. After a while, he was back to his usual and boisterous self once more and I was relieved. The pain and bleeding subsided after some 20 minutes or so, leaving behind a swollen lip with some wound marks.
All weekend I was out with that ugly lip but you know what? Most of the time I don’t even remember it and so I was totally not conscious of how I looked. Since it wasn’t painful most of the time, I was also eating just about anything I wanted.
It got a lot better today, just in time for me to head back to work without much of a trace of wounded lip. At the most you’d only notice one tiny black dot on my lip which is the dried blood clot. I wonder when it will totally disappear. I don’t want to look like I don’t ever clean my mouth after eating in case people are wondering why on earth I keep having a stained lip!
So what are some of your horror stories on parenting hazards?

Hey, considered yourself lucky. I always get the head knock from Hayley too and I would often end up with cuts on my lips that would end up becoming ulcers and they will last for weeks! Really painful ones….
Better be more careful…my cousin once got her teeth knocked out! Now I’m very very careful already…you should do the same.
