I read with disgust yesterday about the news report that one of Slumdog Millionaire’s Oscar child, Rubina Ali, is put up for sale or adoption by her father. Reports quoted Rubina’s father as saying that he had to consider the best options for himself, his family and Rubina and decided that putting her up for adoption was in everybody’s interest now that she is a special kid, more specifically, an Oscar child. You can read one of the many reports here.

9 year old Rubina Ali, apparently put up for adoption by her father
Apparently, the asking price for Rubina is to the tune of $300,000. You know, even if you come from the slums, $300,000 for your own flesh and blood is not a lot of money. My kid is no Oscar child material and I won’t even for a minute consider selling him even to the tune of millions of dollars.
Anyway, Rubina’s father is now apparently denying the claims in the press that he was trying to sell his daughter. I’m not sure which story is true. But I would think that no fire would ignite by itself. If this piece of news were really true, I wonder how Rubina’s mother would have felt about the sale of her daughter. Perhaps it is easier for a father to decide on selling his daughter but for a mother, who had carried the child in her womb and given birth to her, I cannot imagine how she could agree. I know I just can’t.
So, if your kid makes it big next time and you wanna get out of some financial troubles, would you consider selling him or her to make life better? Are you now getting more ideas about how to get rich by producing kids who can be groomed to be stars of the future only to be sold off as a commodity?
