Should my 11-month old be cleaning his teeth?

by Penny on July 23, 2008

I read quite a few parenting sites and many of such sites say that as soon as baby has teeth and is on solids, it means that his teeth will need cleaning. He’s just 11 months old (in a couple more days) and I’m not sure if I should be starting him on teeth brushing.

In any case, I went around looking at baby toothpaste and I saw only one brand available from Guardian thus far.

First_teeth_baby_toothpaste

First Teeth Baby Toothpaste is fluoride free and safe for baby to swallow. It has active milk enzymes and is naturally flavoured with apple and banana. (I can’t imagine brushing my teeth with a paste that tastes like food, can you?!) It is recommended for babies age 3 months and above.

The way that’s recommended to use this paste is to squeeze the paste onto a gum brush and parents shall gently help baby do the brushing. (At this stage, I’m also terrified of my finger being bitten as my baby bites hard!).

You can opt to buy only the toothpaste (a whopping RM25.70 at Guardian) or you can buy the toothpaste and the gum brush set at RM40.70. If it weren’t for the huge price tag, I would’ve bought this to try on baby. I think I’ll look around some more to see if there are cheaper alternatives. Or is it too early to start?
