My son is almost bald!

by Penny on June 26, 2009

It’s always been a problem bringing Ryan for a haircut. He would protest and create such a scene that we ended up walking out of the hair salon in embarrassment. So the babysitter helps us out by bringing him instead. He still creates quite a bit of a scene and fusses about during the haircut, but at least he’s able to get his hair trimmed.

He used to have quite long hair that falls nicely around his head, giving him a pretty girlish look. Then it got so long and so thick that everyone around him felt hot on his behalf! So when the babysitter brought him to the salon, they had it cut quite short and since then he sported a crew cut.

Recently even his crew cut looked quite messy since it got long and thick again so off he went for another haircut. We actually didn’t know he was brought in for a haircut until we went to pick him up that night.

I got such a shock to see that he was almost bald! Like a little Shaolin monk!! I gasped but did not want to show him as I think he didn’t like his own haircut too. He’s a pretty vain boy who likes looking into the mirror and smiling sheepishly at himself. That night, when his daddy brought him in front of the mirror, he didn’t want to look into it. When we asked him if he thought his haircut was a handsome one, he said “No good”.

But everyday and whenever I can, I will reassure him that he looks just as handsome. He is anyway, in my eyes. Even if he ends up with not a strand of hair on his head, he will remain the most handsome person in the world to me.

It’s now a blessing that his hair grows out quite fast. So we’ll wait until it has grown some, then try to get him to the salon to get a quick fix as some parts have been unevenly shaved. But I think that will be an uphill task, one that is going to be more difficult than all the haircut experiences combined because I think he now hates getting a haircut more than ever!

Do you have a toddler who refuses haircuts? If so, how do you ease him or her into doing it? We’re going to need a lot of help! So any advise will be truly appreciated.

YES I DO!

Brought Hayley into the salon for the 1st time 2 weeks ago and she reacted as if she’s seen the doctor. In the end, the stylist only managed to trim the fringe slightly (making it more uneven than before) and that was it. The stylist didn’t even want to collect money from us.

The worst part is the babysitter kept pestering us to do something about it, adding the pressure. Sigh..we’re hoping to bring her into the salon again in a few weeks. This time I will get a trim myself first to show her that it was nothing painful and hopefully she will buy it.

I just cut it myself! And cut it whenever he is ok with it.
Me cheap skate mum.

Amy, oh dear…looks like we’re in the same boat. We’ve let Ryan watch his daddy get a haircut before but it still didn’t work. Not sure if it might help that we actually do it at the same time as him…we’ve just got to try and see!

Haha, it’s funny that Hayley managed to get her little trim for free! :P

Busy Bee, I really don’t know how you do it…it’s either you’re really great at handling your kids or they’re just so wonderful and fuss-free!

Busy Bee, I Salute you.. hehe

Penny, I think I will try what Busy bee suggested. Will ask my hubby to give her a trim and see if she’s ok with it..

At bad times like this, it’s good to be a cheap skate mum :-)

The papa finally did the trim himself and she was actually ok with it until I took over. The clumsy me accidently caused a tiny cut on her neck and she cried (my heart ached). But after a while she was ok again. But still it wasn’t short enough as we dare not go any shorter. I guess we still need to bring her to the salon.

Oh dear!! Poor Hayley and poor you. I’m sure you suffered more heartache than she did the pain! That’s one reason why I would never do it myself coz I’m clumsy. So I guess no more cutting hair yourself since you still need to bring her to a salon huh?

We might have to do it ourselves again (this time I won’t do it for sure) if she still resist going to the salon.

Guess what? My babysitter cut Ryan’s hair yesterday while he was taking a nap! He refused to go to the salon so they sneaked on him to do it while he’s sleeping. Hahaha…not perfect but it should do for now to save him the trauma of going to the salon…
