When Ryan was about 2 years old, we bought him some posters of fruits and vegetables, animals, objects and even of different occupations to teach him different words. Since then, he knew about barber, tailor, fisherman, etc.
When we asked him what he would like to be at that time, he would say sailor. Then he met a friend of ours who is a pilot and he changed his mind from wanting to be a sailor to a pilot.
Now, a year later, he’s pretty taken in by the super heroes of the world, the likes of Ultraman, Spiderman and Iron Man. Of late, he even thinks that a fireman is some sort of a super hero because he knows a fireman’s job is to rescue people in trouble.
For his birthday, he received a set of fireman vest, complete with the fireman helmet and tools. Since then he’s been a busy little fireman at home rescuing us from our many “distress”.
Some 2 nights ago I happened to tune in to Wah Lai Toi on Astro and the TVB drama that was on was about a group of firemen. He sat still beside me and watched in awe as the firemen went in rescue of some building on fire. It’s the first time he has seen a fireman in action (albeit just a drama).
Now he’s even more captivated about being a fireman. I don’t dare ask, but I think if I do pop the question now as to what he wants to be when he grows up, he’ll say fireman! Hahaha.
Oh well, I guess all boys go through stages like these when they feel great to be of help and service to others. I don’t know whether it’s an inborn macho thing for boys, but that’s how it seems to be huh?
For those who know him well, they’ve always said he should be a lawyer or go into a sales career because he loves to talk. He himself admits that he’s talkative and even tell others that.
But I guess his love for serving people as a “super hero” is more than serving them any other way. It’s an interesting journey to see what he eventually chooses to be when he grows up.
Do you remember your own journey from what you thought you wanted to be when you were a child and what you actually have ended up to be now? I remember my story and it’s very different from what I really am today.
