Do you agree that these days a lot of ladies, especially after they’ve become mummies, turn to be entrepreneurs? I personally have come across mummies that are work from home mothers and they are very happy doing what they’re setting out to do. Many of them are also very ambitious with their home-based business ventures too.

I find more and more mummies are now taking advantage of the internet as a medium to set up a trading business. Many of the blog shops are run by mothers. From niche baby products to maternity products for other mothers, clothes, accessories and even lingerie, arts and crafts, scrap booking products and even educational books and toys. You name it, some mothers are already doing it and even well received in the market.

Being one myself, I find it a great way to run a business without having to leave home too much in order to run the business. So far I’ve enjoyed doing so and I’m sure other net-preneur mothers are feeling the same. Some may even be looking after their kids and running their shops at the same time. What more could you ask for, right?

As great as it sounds, I’ve got to admit running a business and doing so from home is not the easiest thing to handle. There are moments of work pressure even when it’s a self-run business. So work-at-home mummies have their down moments too.

Just imagine when you are home-based, you miss out on interacting with friends at work. And when you first start out in business, you’ve got to do everything from the nitty-gritty to the bigger things by yourself. You’ve got to start managing accounts, do the marketing and sales, customer servicing, etc. All these become a 1-person job, no more passing on the duties to fellow colleagues in their specialised departments to run the numbers or do their marketing magic for you. Suddenly, you have to be the expert in every field!

But as with everything, these days you can find just about anything you need on the internet, including solutions. What I have found to complement my needs as well as act as a great resource and support to me is this support group called The Mom Entrepreneur Support Group.

Nowadays support can come from just about anyone, and virtually, so it doesn’t matter that it’s a group that’s not even in the same country I live in. Having said that, I’m sure it’ll be great too if there’s something similar in this country so at least once in a while, some of the support group members can get together. Have you seen, heard or even joined something like this in Malaysia? If you have, do introduce to me, I would love to be a member

So how do I feel after 6 months of being a work at home mum? Great, really. It’s worth taking that risk and going through the initial pain to get to where I want to be in the end. So it is worth it for me. How about the other work at home mums? What are your stories?

Net-preneur mummies have their moments too

Yesterday after breakfast, I was getting Ryan ready to go over to the babysitter’s place. When we were at it, he suddenly flashed me a big grin, held both my hands and said “Mummy, dance with me…” and I found myself twirling about with him, laughing silly and enjoying the moment.

These were probably little things that I couldn’t have enjoyed back when I was tied down to a job because it meant getting out of the house in a rush to get to work on time in the mornings. There won’t be time to do a little silly dance or stop for a while to talk about things that mattered to him like his broken fishing rod toy or his wishes to simply go out to the coffee shop for breakfast.

Even though being a work from home mum means unstable income versus a fixed monthly salary, you do get a lot of satisfaction from the freedom of time that you have, not to mention all these little things that make your heart warm at moments you don’t expect.

So if you ask me if I regret giving up that opportunity to work for a company that was going to pay me more than what I asked for but I’d have to work late and learn about Gulf Coast Jones Act and understand how it works, versus not earning as much but learning to be a better and more attentive mother and understanding my son better, well I’d take the second option anytime.

But that’s just me, everyone is different and need different things in life. If you know what you want, go for it and never look back.

Over the last two days something urgent and unexpected came up in the course of doing business. Each day I was dragged away for a good half a day to the same place to deal with some matters and in the course of that, learned some new experiences. Not to mention it came with an exorbitant fee. But as some new acquaintance I met while settling the matters put it, it should be treated as “tuition fees”.

Putting it that way, I didn’t feel so bad paying the fees. It was a good learning experience and I suppose many people do learn from rookie mistakes in their own businesses one way or another, and then they get better after learning the hard way.

So far it’s been a great journey learning the ropes of handling a business, from A to Z. I never would have been able to learn as much if I were still employed by a company. I would never be learning about applying for business insurance, calling on all sorts of people and just talking to them as if we were friends, gaining little bits of insights on how the nitty gritty of some must-have business processes. My learning curve has thus far been a lot sharper than the decade I’ve worked!

Would I want to take the old path taken now that I’ve been on this new one? Doesn’t look like it will happen

Two days of expensive learning

It looks like I’m going to have more late nights with the recent development of things. Sometimes I wonder if I’m putting too much on my plate, more than I can chew. But then again, I do think I can chew quite a lot and quite fast too! Haha. Greedy, greedy.

Luckily for me, I have a supportive family behind me in whatever I decide to do. Even little Ryan who barely understands the world of the rat race nor business venture is full of supportive words and enthusiasm. What more can I ask for? So even if I have to have more late nights, it’s worth the sacrifice for now.

With the new venture that I’m getting into, I think it might help with the business if I do more targeted marketing. I’ve explored some sites like http://www.freedirectorysubmission.com but find that free stuff don’t always work well. So maybe I should think about spending some marketing dollars to get better results.

I’m excited as ever at the moment. My mind is active and it looks like I’ll have trouble going to bed tonight with a mind shining like a bright light bulb! So I may as well stay awake and get as much work done as possible. At the end of the day, when I’ve done enough work and it’s time to finally get some sleep, I look forward to lying next to Ryan who’s sweetly sound asleep.

Ahh, the beauty of being a mummy…

When I was so absorbed making up my mind to leave employment to reach my dream of being a work-at-home-mum, I thought of mostly the financial aspects and business opportunities and naturally all the fears and insecurities that come with it. But there was something that I forgot to consider, or rather it didn’t really occur to me while I was making my decision.

It still didn’t occur to me until just this week that all the free insurance and medical benefits that I get from being employed were rather great perks to have. Not only were my personal medical bills taken care of, but that of my immediate family.

It’s a good thing I have an insurance policy all along so it’s not as if I’m left totally unprotected now that the company one ceases. But I do think it’s a good idea also for me to add on a policy, especially if I can get cheaper term life insurance from Wholesale Insurance companies.

So if you are in the midst of becoming a WAHM like me, don’t forget these little benefits that actually add up to count quite a bit when you are on your own. Not that I’m saying it should be something that will set you back from your decision to go for what you want, but just bear in mind and be conscious of it.

Whatever decision you make, it must be the right and good one
