Over the last two days something urgent and unexpected came up in the course of doing business. Each day I was dragged away for a good half a day to the same place to deal with some matters and in the course of that, learned some new experiences. Not to mention it came with an exorbitant fee. But as some new acquaintance I met while settling the matters put it, it should be treated as “tuition fees”.

Putting it that way, I didn’t feel so bad paying the fees. It was a good learning experience and I suppose many people do learn from rookie mistakes in their own businesses one way or another, and then they get better after learning the hard way.

So far it’s been a great journey learning the ropes of handling a business, from A to Z. I never would have been able to learn as much if I were still employed by a company. I would never be learning about applying for business insurance, calling on all sorts of people and just talking to them as if we were friends, gaining little bits of insights on how the nitty gritty of some must-have business processes. My learning curve has thus far been a lot sharper than the decade I’ve worked!

Would I want to take the old path taken now that I’ve been on this new one? Doesn’t look like it will happen

Now that I’m in a profession where I collect lots of business cards of people from all walks of life, I’ve collected more than a thousand cards thus far. In this very short period of time I’ve actually collected more contacts that I ever did in all my years of being employed combined. Amazing, huh?

Having collected so many business cards, it actually widened my horizon as to what so many people do for a living. I not only came across business cards of people in the country but many out of this country too. I was quite amazed having come across a pleasanton motorcycle accident attorney’s business card. Imagine how specific a job can come down to!

Life has been interesting getting to meet all sorts of people who hold all kinds of jobs. Of all those people that I met thus far, I sometimes look at them and wonder if what they are doing is what they have always wanted to be or it’s just a job that pays the bills. For most people, the latter is usually the case.

I consider myself to be one of those too while I was employed. But now I am truly doing something that I choose to do and feel very good about it. Because of this experience, I would want the same for Ryan too, for him to be able to do something that he enjoys and most importantly, wants to do rather than have to do.

What about you? Have you thought about it? If we don’t think about it consciously, more often than not parents will tend to bring up their children to think that they need to go out there, study hard, get excellent grades, graduate with an honours degree and get the best job they possibly can and work their way from bottom to top and it doesn’t matter if it’s not in their area of interest. If it is, it’s a big bonus.

How do you feel about that? Is that how it should be because that’s how it has been for us?

This is just a personal sharing. For a few months now I’ve been constantly listening to some excellent audio programs by Jim Rohn and his friends like Denis Waitley and Brian Tracy. All these successful people advocate the same things – to work hard and build up good habits in life in order to achieve what you want to do.

I’ve benefited a lot from listening to all these people and I think for those who want to set out on their own, these programs are a must. Not only do you learn a thing or two from these gurus, I think it’s also a great source of inspiration. I’ve been listening to the same program over and over again and each time I repeat the program, I do pick up something new which I didn’t before, and to continue to feel motivated too.

These programs are not only tailored for people who want to achieve financial success. They also talk quite a lot about achieving goals like improving relationships and achieving better health. There’s never a shortcut to get to your goals, so they’re not going to tell you some secret paths to having better relationships or going on crash diets that work. So to me, they are very realistic in sharing how you achieve what you want rather than telling you it’s going to be an easy road ahead. They do prepare you well to go through rough paths along the way.

Now that I’m in business for myself, I find that the things I learned while being an employee are useful but I still have a steep learning curve when being on my own. Most of the time I talk to lots of people and therefore need to be at least an interesting person to hold interesting conversations with all sorts of characters that I meet.

This didn’t occur to me until I met some interesting people and they started talking about things that I had no interest in but found that maybe I should read up some if not a lot of them just to be able to have smarter conversations. I’m not saying I have to be a miss-know-it-all, but it does help to know maybe a little of it and then apologize for not knowing the in-depth matter. I think it’s realistic for people not to know everything in-depth, don’t you think?

Some of the conversations that I came across involved financial issues like the Outer banks foreclosures, political opinions on our local as well as international governments, the issue of oil and gas and the speculation of when the resource will finally deplete. There are a couple more conversations regarding more trivial matters but I can’t figure out why they are of so much interests to some people.

I suppose the only way for me to know about a little of everything is to read lots. The only trouble with that is time. I don’t have enough time as it is trying to run 2 businesses, what more to spare some time to read about a little of everything. Perhaps when I become more settled in my work, and also not falling asleep together with Ryan at his bedtime, maybe I can squeeze in some good time for reading. After all I do love to read but have done very little of it in the last few years due to other priorities taking over my time.

Change of learning curve

Since starting out on my own in the last 2 weeks, I’ve been leaving my online world far behind. By that I mean my blogs and also my blog shop. It’s a little unfortunate as I really love being online, but I guess as I start out, I need to make time for all the things I need to get in place and sacrifice some of the other things that I enjoy doing.

I’ve also been sacrificing the hours at home and to the point of not being able to see Ryan for 2 days in a row. I come home late at night, pass his bedtime and leave the next morning before he’s awake. Some of the hours during my weekend were also spent on work and off I went again without spending time with him.

Sometimes I console myself by telling myself that this is the beginning stage and once I’ve managed to get past establishing a comfortable level, time will be on my side and I will reach my objective of having more time and being more financially rewarded for my efforts. I truly believe this and that’s what keeps me going.

However, having said all that, I do find that the last 2 weeks’ experiences have been nothing short of exciting. I’ve learned a lot of different things and have thrown myself out of my comfort zone by doing things I’ve never done before. I’m learning about things  related and non-related to what I do as a result of talking and listening to others as they speak. I would never have expected to listen for half an hour to someone talk on and on about Anilox, never would’ve learned about how cheaply one can print their business cards, and even listening to how some people manage to buy property after property!

I guess from now on as I meet more and more people, I can expect to be learning lots more in the days to come…and hopefully I get settled soon in my desired working hours. It sure takes discipline (lots of it!) and hard work. But it’s all going to be worth my while and sacrifices for now…
