To sing or not to sing?

by Penny on February 23, 2008

Contrary to the popular belief that soothing music provides baby with better sleep, my little boy sleeps better without it. For months he has been sleeping with soft music playing in the background. Then recently mom recalled reading in a book that music disturbs the sleeping pattern and baby would be better off without it (read more about it here).

Some weeks back I wrote about baby having sudden crying outbursts in his sleep. This happens almost every night and we came to the conclusion that it’s due to too much play and laughter in the daytime. So we slowed down on the games but it made no difference.

When mom brought up the music matter, we switched off the music immediately. You won’t believe it, baby has had no sudden outbursts anymore! So now I do believe that the music somehow had effects on his sleep.

I’m not sure if this is true for other babies, but I’m one who would rather be safe than sorry. I’m sharing this story so that any parents out there who play music to their little ones might want to reconsider to give their children better rest and sleep in the nights.
