Two falls and an injured mom

by Penny on August 30, 2008

This morning baby fell off the mattress and knocked himself on the floor. It was a rather loud thud. He cried and cried and I felt so sorry for the little boy. I’m sure he was more shocked than he was hurt. Luckily, we had already removed our bedframe and are sleeping just on the mattress which is laid on the floor. So at least the fall wasn’t from a high place.

He soon forgot about the fall when I gave him a warm bottle of milk. Whenever he got to the edge of the bed and we warned him about falling and made the thud sound to remind him of the fall, he would hesitate about wanting to crawl off the edge of the bed. But you know, I think the memory of the fall didn’t stay very long with him because by afternoon, he was laughing and smiling whenever we warned him again.

We have now put a thin single mattress next to ours so that if he falls again, he won’t knock himself too hard. Guess what? He loved the idea of having a soft landing and has started enjoying himself climbing up and down the two mattresses!

Later in the afternoon, he was seated in his walker and was happily roaming about the living room. All was quiet while we weren’t watching him and that made his father wonder out loud what he’s up to being so silent. That’s when I went to have a look and he was near the grille door. He went towards it and to my horror, the grille door wasn’t closed. There’s a step leading down to the porch so I was very lucky to have dashed in time to catch hold of the falling baby in his walker. In that process, I had two toe nails broken and a sore bruise on the arm. It doesn’t really matter as long as he didn’t fall. He fell very silent after that little commotion and sat quietly but sheepishly on grandma’s lap, watching me check out my nails and bruise. It was a real close call.

I told myself I have to be extra careful with him today. It’s been 2 falls already. Whilst he doesn’t seem to contain that fear, I certainly do. My mom says this is what parental hazards are all about. I certainly agree with that…
