I think it's common that they do it without anyone teaching them, and they're testing our patience as well as finding out where our limits are! Am truly happy for you. Busy Bee, how to do spot checks? I have used the same babysitter for 10 months + now and have not actually spot check on her except occasionally arriving at her door step 30 mins earlier than usual to pick up Hayley. I am not sure how else to spot check on her. Although I 'think' she is good (well I wont know what she is like the moment I turn my back on her right), it would also be a good idea to do checks once in a while just to be sure ;-) Hey, congratulations!
