What gets a mum fully alert in the dead of the night

by Penny on December 9, 2008

What is it that gets a mother fully awake and alert in the middle of the night? The cries of a child, sure…but most times when baby cries in the middle of the night, I’m still half groggy from sleep although I could be up making the milk and feeding him. But last night, I was up and alert when he cried. What was so different about last night compared to other nights when he cries?

Usually, he would cry for a few reasons in the night. It’s either he’s hot or cold and frustrated about it, hungry or simply just longing for milk, a bad dream, or sometimes just feeling uneasy possibly due to tummy upsets or feeling sick. But last night was different.

His cries were soft, almost like whimpering. Normally these kinds of cries don’t get much of our attention because we think he’ll settle right back into sleep after he’s done stirring about a little bit. But in his soft cries, he cried out “Mummy…Mimi…”

That was enough to get me fully awake and alert! I was actually really happy that he was calling out for me!! Am I a desperate mother or what? I don’t care…I’m just happy that my little one feels comforted to want me around when he stirs in the darkness of the night for whatever reasons!

Your son is so sweet! I guess I would wake up too if my baby called out for me :)

Oh I’m sure you would, and sit up right grinning from ear to ear! Well, at least for the first time that happens, right?
